Cigars You Should be Smoking
and Probably Aren't

Before I begin this article, I want to thank you for taking the time to read it, so a big thanks! I also want to thank the editor for publishing it.

This is my opinion as a retailer of the best cigar you are not smoking but probably should be. The La Gloria Cubana Glorias En Cedro is a beautiful 6 ¾”x 48 tubed Dominican cigar with an extra oily Ecuadorian wrapper with Dominican and Nicaraguan filler by famed cigar master Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. I was introduced to this smoky, slightly-spicy parejo by a former co-worker (thanks Jerry). You can expect a slightly spicy start, but it will even out to an almost coco-nutty finish. The ash is Cuban gray and the aroma will have people from across the room coming over and asking you if you have an extra smoke.

In 1959 during the first cigar exodus, Cuban Senator and tobacco farmer Ernesto Perez-Carrillo fled to Miami with his family and a dream of bringing the Cuban tradition of cigar making to America. In 1968 the first non-Cuban La Gloria Cubana was born in the little Havana region of Miami and became an underground legend. It wasn’t until 1980 when Ernesto Jr. took the reigns, making the La Gloria one of the most sought after cigars in the south.

The En Cedro was a renaissance of the La Gloria brand for me. I remembered how great this brand was before the boom and before the evil giants of corporate America bought out this little brand known to only a few educated cigar enthusiasts outside of Miami.

The Cedro reminded me of Ernesto’s glory days and made me say “hey you need to smoke more of these great sticks!”, and as a retailer I decided to take to the humidor and let all of my customers know what they are missing out on. Sounds easy right? It couldn’t be further from the truth. The problem I ran in to is simple; if the cigar wasn’t featured in a “nationally syndicated cigar magazine” people were hesitant to smoke it. Not to be deterred I staked my reputation as a tobacconist on the En Cedro. This is not something I take lightly because lets face it, after the boom there were a lot of shady guys out there and it made it hard to put an un-rated cigar in the customers’ hands. Fortunately it paid off and my customers have rediscovered the greatness of La Gloria Cubana cigars just like I did. Now I have to keep extra boxes on hand not only for myself but for the converts of the En Cedro.

So next time your local tobacconist tells you “Hey you need to try this cigar it is awesome!” Take their word for it chances are it might just be your next favorite cigar. Thanks for taking the time to read this if you know of a cigar that hasn’t been getting the props you think it should let me know it might become my next favorite too.
