WINTER 2005

New Cigars to Market

(Habanos) Ramon Allones Belicoso

{review by Mitchell Orchant, Proprietor, C.Gars Ltd}

The Ramon Allones Belicosos was launched exclusively in the UK market in February 2005. It is not likely to be available anywhere else in the world this year at least.

I have always been a fan of the brand and in particular the Small Club Corona (good strong small morning cigar) and the Specially Selected (anytime of day works for this medium strength robusto). I find the Corona (now discontinued) quite one dimensional and the Gigantes too big and too bland for my taste.

Consequently, I was delighted when I heard the Belicosos was to be made.

The wrapper is typical colorado and vein free and the pre-light bouquet is light and pleasant and the draw is easy.

The cigar is not anything special for the first quarter but I suspect that this is due to the youth of the filler tobacco. Thereafter the blend improves and the complexity shows through till the cigar is finished.

The blend is well balanced and remarkably similar to the Ramon Specially Selected I remember from the early to mid 90's-medium to full strength with plenty of medium flavour in a good full draw. Lots of cedar and honeyed tones make a nice combination. The after taste on the palette lingers and is most pleasant. The cigar was large enough to satisfy.

The aroma is spicy.

This cigar is not for the beginner and best suited as an after lunch cigar in my humble opinion.

I would estimate that with 6-12 months age in the humidor this cigar will develop into a splendid Puros which I currently rate at around 8.5 out of 10.

Kindest regards,
Mitchell Orchant
